A Place to Belong: A Month of Worldschooling at Earth School Aotearoa

When families enquire about worldschooling at Earth School Aotearoa, their questions often reach beyond accommodation and learning activities.

Will our children make friends? What will an ordinary week feel like? Will we meet local families? Can we settle into a community while still having time to explore New Zealand?

These questions matter. Spending a month somewhere offers time to become familiar with a place: to recognise faces, find a favourite walk, and return to a conversation that began the week before.

At Mangaroa Farms, near Wellington, we welcome worldschooling families into a learning community connected to the land and to the people who live here.

Where will we live?

Worldschooling families stay in furnished homes at Mangaroa Farms, with space to cook, rest and establish their own family rhythm.

The homes occupy different locations across the farm. The schoolhouse is a gathering place for children’s learning; while the market garden, permaculture zone, farm shop, tree nursery, river, pastures, farm trails and forests offer rich learning opportunities that are actively woven into educational programming.

Before you arrive, we help you understand where your home sits in relation to learning spaces and shared facilities.

What will our children’s week look like?

Our standard worldschooling package includes five days per week at Earth School. We discuss the programme operating during your proposed dates and the right arrangement for each child before booking.

Children join local learners in experiences that connect nature, creativity, practical work and relationships. Literacy, numeracy and scientific thinking are woven into activities: measuring a garden bed, recording an observation, sharing a story or working out how to build something together.

The following is an illustrative week, rather than a fixed timetable. Activities change with the season, weather, current projects and children’s interests.

Day

What learning might look like

Monday

Investigating a nature theme such as water, soil or pollination through observation, experiments and outdoor exploration.

Tuesday

Practical project work connected to the land: gardening, caring for plants, making or continuing a shared project.

Wednesday

Creative inquiry through art, movement, music, nature journalling or work inspired by the week’s discoveries.

Thursday

Culture, stories and expression through waiata, pūrākau, shared traditions and contributions from local and visiting families.

Friday

Forest exploration, outdoor play and time to notice changes in familiar places.

Shared kai and opportunities to reflect together are part of the learning rhythm.

Families with younger siblings are welcome to enquire. Please tell us every child’s age so we can discuss suitable participation and any caregiver involvement needed. We want the arrangements to work for the whole family.

How will we become part of the community?

Earth School’s community includes local children and families who return regularly. Visiting children join those relationships and shared projects.

Other worldschooling families may be staying during your visit, but their numbers and dates vary. Your children’s opportunities for connection also come through meeting our children whose home is here.

We make room for introductions, finding your way around and becoming comfortable with the learning environment. Some children are ready to join straight away; others need time to observe and get to know people.

Belonging often grows through ordinary moments: helping with a task, sitting beside someone at lunch, remembering a name, or discovering a shared interest.

Visiting families also bring something valuable to the community. Once you have had time to settle, we invite you to share something of your heritage: a story, recipe, song, game or piece of wisdom passed through your family.

There is no need for a polished presentation. The invitation is to help us know you, while offering children a chance to encounter another way of seeing and living in the world.

What can parents do during learning hours?

For parents, a longer stay can offer space to establish a rhythm of their own.

The standard package includes access to co-working space and the farm gym. Parents may use learning hours to work, exercise, read, walk or rest.

There are ample opportunities to participate in farm and community life. Depending on what is happening during your stay, this might include participating in family-based harvest and preservation activities, attending workshops, an arranged volunteer activity or contributing a skill you would enjoy sharing.

There are also many adventure based activities on the land here and in the surrounding area including: hiking, hunting, rafting, kayaking, fishing and more. Nearby, Wellington, Brewtown and Wairarapa offer exceptional foodie experiences in addition to our farm-to-table experiences at Mangaroa Farms.

What happens outside programme hours?

Afternoons can be simple: a snack at home, a walk, time outdoors or a quiet evening cooking together. The farm shop offers access to seasonal produce and other local food, while the gardens and trails provide places to explore as a family.

Mangaroa is a working farm. We help families understand the appropriate routes and access arrangements, including around animals, waterways and active work areas.

Community opportunities vary through the year. Shared meals, seasonal celebrations, workshops and harvest activities can offer further ways to meet people when they coincide with your stay.

Weekends leave room for both rest and discovery. Families might explore Wellington, visit museums and beaches, walk further afield, or stay close to home. Having a familiar base allows outings to sit within a steadier family rhythm.

How do we enquire?

Please send us your preferred dates, intended length of stay, family size and children’s ages. It also helps to hear about your children’s interests, any support needs, and what you hope to experience together.

We will discuss accommodation availability, learning arrangements and whether the stay feels like a good fit for your family.

Explore worldschooling at Earth School Aotearoa, or enquire about current pricing and availability.

We would love to hear what brings your family to Aotearoa and help you find a rhythm of learning, connection and everyday life here.
